Inspector's check · Kitchen, baths and laundry
Does each bathroom fan pull air and vent outside?
Turn the fan on and hold a square of toilet paper near the grille; it should be pulled flat. Fans should vent outdoors, not into the attic.
Why it matters
Steam that isn't removed causes mold and peeling paint, and a fan venting into the attic grows mold up there.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Bathroom fan is weak or vents into the attic” and rate it routine maintenance. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY, $0 to $10: Clean the fan grille and blades.
- Handyman (usually best), $200 to $600: Replace the fan or run its duct to a roof or wall vent.
- Pro, $400 to $900: Electrician installs a new fan with a humidity sensor.
