Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
If you have gas, oil or an attached garage, is there a CO alarm on each level?
Carbon monoxide alarms belong outside sleeping areas and on each level. Test them and check the date; most last 7 to 10 years.
Why it matters
Carbon monoxide has no smell. An alarm is the only warning before it makes people sick or worse.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Missing or expired carbon monoxide alarms” and rate it safety first. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $25 to $100: Install plug-in or battery CO alarms outside bedrooms and on each level.
- Handyman, $150 to $400: Install combination smoke and CO alarms throughout.
