Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
Is there a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen, with its gauge in the green?
Look for a multipurpose (ABC) extinguisher near the kitchen exit, not behind the stove. The needle should sit in the green, the pin and seal should be in place, and it shouldn't be more than about 12 years old (the date is on the label or bottom).
Why it matters
Most home fires start in the kitchen. An extinguisher stops a small fire before it becomes a big one.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “No working fire extinguisher” and rate it safety first. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $25 to $80: Buy a 2.5 to 5 lb ABC extinguisher for the kitchen, and ideally one per level and in the garage.
