Is the furnace or air handler filter clean?
Slide out the filter (in the furnace cabinet or a return grille). If it is gray and you can't see light through it, it's due.
Why it matters
A clogged filter makes the system work harder, raises energy bills and can overheat the furnace.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Dirty HVAC filter” and rate it routine maintenance. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $10 to $40: Replace the filter with the size printed on its edge. Set up the seasonal plan to be reminded.
