Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
Do outlets near water trip and reset when you press TEST?
Kitchen counters, bathrooms, laundry, garage, unfinished basement and outdoor outlets should be GFCI-protected. Press TEST, check the power is off, then press RESET.
Why it matters
GFCI outlets cut power in a fraction of a second when current leaks, preventing serious shocks near water.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Missing or faulty GFCI protection” and rate it safety first. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- Handyman, $100 to $300: Replace outlets with GFCI outlets where allowed.
- Pro (usually best), $150 to $600: Electrician adds GFCI protection to each required circuit.
