Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
Can your house number be read from the street, day and night?
Stand at the curb, and come back after dark. Numbers should be at least 4 inches tall, contrast with the wall, and not be hidden by trees or a porch post. Rural homes should have the number at the end of the driveway too.
Why it matters
Ambulances and fire crews lose minutes hunting for unmarked houses.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “House number hard to see from the street” and rate it fix this year. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $15 to $60: Put up larger, contrasting numbers near a light, or a reflective sign at the driveway.
- Handyman, $75 to $200: Mount numbers and a light where they're visible from the road.
