Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
Is the electrical panel clear, dry and labeled, with no warm or buzzing breakers?
Keep 3 feet clear in front of the panel. Look for rust, scorch marks, a buzzing sound, and an up-to-date circuit directory. Don't remove the cover.
Why it matters
Heat, rust or scorch marks at the panel can mean failing breakers or loose connections, which are fire risks.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Electrical panel needs attention” and rate it fix now. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY, $0 to $20: Clear the area and label circuits by flipping breakers one at a time.
- Pro (usually best), $200 to $800: Electrician inspects the panel, tightens connections and replaces bad breakers.
