Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
Are stair railings solid and are steps even?
Grab each handrail and guardrail and push; it shouldn't move. Look for loose treads, uneven steps and missing balusters, inside and out.
Why it matters
Falls on stairs are one of the most common home injuries, especially for kids and older adults.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Loose stair railing or uneven steps” and rate it safety first. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY, $10 to $40: Re-secure a loose handrail bracket into a stud with longer screws.
- Handyman (usually best), $200 to $800: Rebuild loose rails and fix uneven treads.
- Pro, $800 to $3,000: Carpenter rebuilds stairs or guardrails to code.
