Inspector's check · Basement and crawlspace
If there is a sump pump, does it start when you add water?
Slowly pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. The float should rise and the pump should start, empty the pit and shut off. The discharge pipe outside should not be blocked.
Why it matters
A failed sump pump is found out the hard way, in a flooded basement during the next big storm.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Sump pump did not run when tested” and rate it fix now. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY, $0 to $30: Clear debris from the pit and free a stuck float; check the outlet and breaker.
- Handyman (usually best), $300 to $700: Replace the pump with a same-size unit.
- Pro, $600 to $1,800: Plumber replaces the pump and adds a battery backup.
