Inspector's check · Kitchen, baths and laundry
Is it dry under every sink?
Empty the cabinets under kitchen and bathroom sinks. Look for drips at the supply valves and drain joints, swollen cabinet floors and stains. Run the water and feel the pipes.
Why it matters
Slow leaks rot cabinets and subfloors and grow mold long before anyone notices.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Leak under a sink” and rate it fix this year. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $10 to $40: Hand-tighten slip nuts on the drain or replace a worn washer; replace a corroded supply line.
- Handyman, $150 to $400: Replace leaking drain parts, supply lines and shutoff valves.
- Pro, $250 to $800: Plumber repairs leaks in the wall or replaces damaged pipe.
