Inspector's check · Kitchen, baths and laundry
Are the washing machine hoses braided steel and in good shape?
Pull the washer out a bit. Rubber hoses with bulges, cracks or that are over 5 years old are a flood risk. Braided stainless hoses are better.
Why it matters
A burst washer hose can release hundreds of gallons an hour, one of the most common insurance claims.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Washing machine hoses are a flood risk” and rate it fix this year. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $25 to $50: Replace both hoses with braided stainless steel ones.
- Handyman, $100 to $250: Replace hoses and the supply valves if they are stiff.
