Inspector's check · Safety and electrical
If small children live or visit here, do upstairs windows have stops or guards?
Window screens keep bugs out but won't stop a child. Check that second-floor and higher windows open no more than 4 inches unless an adult releases a stop or guard, and that furniture kids can climb isn't under them. If no young children are around, mark this fine.
Why it matters
Falls from windows injure thousands of young children in the US each year, most from second-floor windows.
If it's a problem
An inspector would write it up as “Upstairs windows need child stops” and rate it safety first. Your options, with rough U.S. costs:
- DIY (usually best), $10 to $50: Fit window stops or guards with an emergency release, and move climbable furniture away from windows.
- Handyman, $100 to $300: Install window guards and stops throughout.
